Yorkie Poo Breed history

Although Poodles are the national dog of France, they originated in Germany, where they were bred and used as retrieving water dogs. At that time, the Poodle’s showy haircut was practical – it allowed the poodle to move about easily while hunting while still protecting certain parts of its body, such as the paws, chest, and head.

With its elegance and intelligence, the poodle became a popular breed among the French nobles and in other parts of Europe. Because of their trainable, attention-loving nature and showy looks, poodles were often used in the circus. They have also been used for hunt truffles- underground mushrooms- with their long snouts.

The Standard Poodle was downsized to the Miniature and the Toy Poodle. If they are well-bred, each breed is a replica of each other.

Yorkshire Terriers were initially rodent-catchers in textile mills and coal mines in Scotland and later England. Their small size was perfect for squeezing into spaces to catch rats and mice.

In 1886, the Yorkshire Terrier was recognized by England’s Kennel Club, and after that publicity, it became a fashionable lap dog. The Yorkshire Terrier was bred to a smaller size to fit its new lifestyle.

In 1885, the American Kennel Club recognized its first Yorkshire Terrier.
Since Yorkiepoos are a designer breed, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. However, they are recognized by the American Hybrid Canine Club, Designer Dog Kennel Club, International Designer Canine Registry, and the Designer Breed Registry.

Yorkiepoos should be brushed every day. If your Yorkiepoos has a curly coat like a poodle, it will need a haircut every 6-8 weeks.

Yorkiepoos ears should be kept dry and cleaned regularly to prevent infection.
Yorkiepoos also need other basic grooming, such as regular nail trims and teeth brushing.

Keeping Your Yorkie Poo Puppy Healthy

Crossbreeds are sometimes resistant to the health problems of their purebred parents; however, they can also be susceptible to the health problems of both parents – the Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle. 

Fortunately, Yorkiepoos are a generally healthy breed. 

Here are some health issues to be aware of: 

• Hypothyroidism (low level of thyroid hormones)
• Epilepsy 
• Portosystemic Shunt (an abnormal connection between stomach and liver can cause seizures and other health problems.) 
• Atopic Dermatitis (caused by allergies)
• Eye problems such as retinal atrophy, cataracts, corneal dystrophy, etc.

Like all dog breeds, they are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia, two of the most common health issues among dogs.

Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or potential lameness if not addressed.

One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from too much running on hard surfaces, especially when they are puppies.

  They can. Because Yorkies have long, silky, hairlike coats, a Yorkiepoo may have a longer coat. Since they are a hybrid, it’s hard to predict what a specific Yorkiepoo puppy's coat will be like. It will be a mix between the long, silky coat of the Yorkie and the tight, curly coat of the Poodle.
